What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha therapy, if you have not heard of it, is a traditional Chinese ancient practice with more than 2,000 years of history in TCM treatments, commonly used to treat muscle pain and symptoms of colds and fever. Gua Sha is a Chinese word that literally means “to scrape away toxins to stimulate blood flow and enhance healing.”
The Science of Gua Sha
The “Physiology of Gua Sha“, also termed as the “Science of Gua Sha“, works on the principle that Gua Sha produces therapeutic microcirculation of the body surface tissue. For affected areas, the rate blood flow is commonly abnormally low. As a result of the lack of drainage due to decreased blood flow, lactic and uric acid (both are metabolic wastes) get trapped underneath the muscles or the skin. As these areas are being scraped, these metabolic wastes which have crystallised and hardened into toxins are broken. Then, they are released into the tissues in the form of Sha, providing for a detoxifying effect of the skin and body.
The Gua sha therapy involves scraping, spooning, and coining of the muscles. Throughout traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) history, practitioners have known that colds and illnesses of the like get trapped in the exterior of our body (e.g. the back, neck, shoulders, etc.). Gua Sha can reduce a fever and alter the course of an acute infectious illness, as well as reduce inflammatory symptoms in chronic illness. In his clinical study, Dr Arya Nielsen discovered the following:
“We found a 400% increase in microperfusion (surface circulation of blood) for 7.5 minutes following Gua Sha, and a significant increase for the full 25 minutes following treatment that was studied.”
Like all the other practices of the traditional Chinese medicine, the principle of balancing the flow of qi, or vital energy, in the body is central to Gua Sha. Areas where there are tight and sore muscles causes blood and qi to be trapped. Gua sha, by rubbing and scraping these muscles, promotes a normal flow of the blood and qi, leading to pain relief.
